Stepping to the front of the mat and attempting to surrender to the idea that for the next 90 minutes we are going to practice "relaxing effort" can present something of a conundrum in our practice. Since yoga is at least in part a physical experience we often assume that without struggle we wont reap its many flaunted benefits. So we hold on tight, contract our mental muscles and launch ourselves into the "work" of making it happen. Instead of floating, we bang and stumble our way from one practice to the next. I refer to this as the "hard work" paradigm and it is mostly about affirming what we already know about our physical experience? Since the effort we exert sometimes allows us to muscle our way through yoga postures that seemed unreachable a few months ago, this paradigm can be difficult to shake. Inevitably though we hit a plateau and begin to wonder why we are working so hard all the time. We begin to wonder if this is it...and for some of us it is. We have simply affirmed what we already knew - our bodies are finite structures.
When I was swimming competitively one of my coaches, Jack Nelson, used to go on and on about how important it was to swim smart. He employed many “fascinating” techniques to make his point (most of which ended with a fairly large portion of the team treading water). I thought I understood his point then but it wasn't until I began suffering through my yoga practice a few years later that his words really clicked into place. “Muscles can help you float or they can drag you down. Brute strength and effort don’t win a race. Efficiency and awareness can make a mediocre swimmer great. Swim smart!”
In life we often approach a situation with our full compliment of attachments, habits and preconceptions about who we are and how we are. Before we say a single word, take a single breath or make our first move we have predetermined the outcome of the experience. Pema Chodron calls it our story line - the self-perpetuating tale we weave to maintain the status quo. Relaxing effort means that we allow the story line and its limiting internal definitions to fall away. Essentially we attempt to move or love or breath or eat or work with intelligence. The key to this form of intelligent action is nonjudgmental observation. We watch, we notice and we make small adjustments that keep us asking questions about where we are. The real practice then is in learning how to allow the experience to live us so that ME stops getting in the way. I have found over the years that intelligent action can infuse an otherwise stale, flat practice with new life and tons of fresh energy. Suddenly we are like children again curiously exploring and playing through what we previously identified as “work”. So the next time you step to the front of your mat don't try so hard to be who you think you are, instead relax the effort and swim smart!

Class Descriptions
Mokshananda Yoga • Not just another rehearsed yoga class! The name Mokshananda is a combination of two sanskrit words: Moksha = liberation + Ananda = bliss (liberating bliss). A Mokshanada class is designed to directly tap into and liberate the bliss contained within each of us. Fusing powerful elements, such as the breath coordinated movements of vinyasa from Ashtanga yoga with the cleansing and clarifying mantras and kriyas from Kundalini yoga, Mokshananda Yoga offers the practitioner a unique and spiritually rich experience. We see these classes as a natural evolution and adaptation of different but complimentary styles of yoga. Never exactly the same, each class will contain a vigorous asana practice, texture rich original music, chanting/mantra, deep relaxation, meditation and much more. If you have taken an onlYoga class previously, you will probably feel right at home and recognize our uniquely creative blend of form and function. Part of what makes Mokshananda yoga powerful is having the ability to show up and remain open to the class as it unfolds. If you haven’t worked with us previously then you are in for a treat...what are you waiting for, join us for a class soon. (all levels welcome)
Ashtanga Foundation Series • Offered once each quarter. Suitable for all levels, these classes offer new students a thorough and safe introduction to learning the Ashtanga Vinyasa method while building the strength and confidence necessary to move into more advanced classes in the studio. For more experienced practitioners, the course provides a tool for reviewing and strengthening the fundamental concepts that make the Ashtanga form so dynamic. We recommend new students start at the beginning of the four week series, however, since this is an ongoing course students can drop in for any of the classes and make up the missed classes in the following cycle. Drop-ins are welcome. (new students welcome!)
Ashtanga Intermediate Primary Series • An intermediate Ashtanga yoga class that builds on the principles introduced in our Intro and foundation level classes. All standing postures are covered with the inclusion of some seated postures and a closing sequence. Emphasis remains on learning to move fluidly with the breath. Some knowledge of the Ashtanga yoga system is helpful but not required. Vinyasa (breath coordinated movement) will be emphasized as students investigate the primary series in greater detail. This class is tailored to begining and intermediate students but everyone is welcome! (new/intermediate)
Vinyasa Flow • In Sanskrit the word "Vinyasa" means breath coordinated movement. At onlYoga our vinyasa flow classes are built around the concept of moving fluidly with the breath from one asana to another. The contiguous and continuous motion creates an intense heat in the body, producing sweat and melting mental and physical resistance (you also burn tons of calories!). Vinyasa flow classes are also designed to push muscles toward greater endurance through long, deep sets of postures. Students of all levels should come prepared for an original class designed to challenge on a multitude of levels! All levels are welcome but students new to yoga should be aware that some previous experience with yoga will be helpful. (intermediate)
Ashtanga Primary Series • Yoga Chikitsa, yoga therapy, is the foundation of Ashtanga yoga. Each class moves quickly, covering all standing, seated and closing postures. By practicing the Ashtanga Yoga primary series in the traditional way, using the rhythm of the breath and the continuous flowing movements of vinyasa between poses, we integrate the body, mind and spirit into a full and complete experience. (intermediate/advanced)
Ashtanga Primary Series Level 2 • This class is intended for students that are familiar with the ashtanga primary series. Classes will explore the primary and sometimes half of the secondary series. Students new to yoga or unfamiliar with the primary series should seek instructor approval before attending the class. Experience with the primary series means that you understand breath, bhandas, dristi and vinyasa. We will also work with traditional pranayama at the end of each class. (advanced/intermediate)
onlYoga Hip/Chest Openings • If you've ever thought "I'm not flexible enough for yoga" or "I wish I were more flexible", this is a class for you. This all levels class will explore targeted postures for systematically opening resistant areas of the mind and body. Combinations of the shoulders, back, chest, hips and hamstrings will be covered in each class to promote greater flexibility and strength. The mind/body relationship to tightness or resistance will also be integrated into the experience. Be ready for a dynamic, fun practice. All levels welcome. (all levels)
Meditation • (peaceful abiding) is the most basic form of sitting meditation. By continually returning to the breath, we train the mind in stability, clarity and strength. All welcome. Donation only. (all levels)
Backbends Opening the Shoulders & Chest • An original series of postures designed to unlock tight shoulders and relieve stiff necks and backs. If you've ever thought "I'm not flexible enough for yoga" or "I wish I were more flexible", this is a class for you. (All levels welcome!)
onlYogaKids • onlYoga is excited to offer a new yoga class for children. onlYogaKids is an age appropriate yoga class recommended for children between the ages of 4-8. In onlYogaKids classes, children have an opportunity to explore the world inside their skin. The resulting awareness of body and breath can enhance balance, strength, coordination, focus, flexibility and encourages stress release. The Self control experienced in class carries over into self-confidence in daily life. onlYogaKids classes introduce classical yoga postures modified as appropriate for the abilities and needs of children. Some of us have flexible spines and backbends come naturally.
Others of us begin to hyperventilate and feel our heart race when
we even attempt basic backbends. Like many asanas backbends can be
powerful tools for helping us develop intelligent awareness of our
bodies and minds. In this workshop we will break down individual
elements that allow us to backbend with control and comfort.
Working with partners we will explore shoulders, hip flexors in our
front, our foundation and our breath. All levels of practitioners
are welcome.

1. We are all aware of the power of words and most of us have
experienced the ability of touch to sooth and heal. One of the most
powerful components of Ashtanga is an instructors ability to guide
a student using touch. Personal contact can bring awareness to what
we are feeling and how we are breathing. In this simple yet
powerful approach, less is often more. Since breath is the guide,
we want to learn to use brief verbal and tactile clues that allow
us and our students to move in and out of an asana, without
disrupting the breath. Working in groups of two or more, we will
learn some of these subtle adjustments that are as important to
understand while you are being adjusted, as they are when you are
giving adjustments. All levels welcome!
2. Inversions and arm balances are an important element of ashtanga
yoga. In this workshop we will explore some of the anatomical
issues related to going upside down. We will work with active and
passive chest openers and explore a variety of strategies to make
your headstand graceful.
