Using Vinyasa for
Internal Strength
with Anne
Nowell
Date:
Sunday May 4th
Time: 1:00-4:00pm
Cost: $40 paid in advance • $45 day of event ($30
Unlimited)
In the Ashtanga Yoga
system the transition between postures is done by vinyasa, which
helps to develop stamina & strength, and maintains heat. When
jumping forward and back, how do we use our core? We have an
understanding of mulabandha but what is its functional purpose? In
this workshop we will focus on learning to develop greater
awareness of the use of the core, which is key in performing smooth
vinyasa transitions. Jumping is fun and adds a psychological
element of play & levity to our practice. Join us for an
afternoon of rigorous play. You will come away with skills that
will enhance and strengthen your internal
practice.
Instructor Anne Nowell
has taught yoga in the US and abroad since 1980. She owned and
operated the Ashtanga Yoga Centers of San Diego for 7 years. In
2007, Anne turned her business over in order to focus on traveling
workshops and Teacher Training programs. Dedicated to the
principals of the 8 limb Ashtanga Yoga path, she is a serious but
playful maestra. More info @ www.annenowell.com

| Day:
Monday
• Time:
6-8pm
• Date:
May 12th
• Instructor:
John
• Cost:
$15 ($5
unlimited students) Space is limited to 25! |
In recognition of
Spring Renewal...and an onlYoga tradition. Part
endurance...part meditation ...completely empowering.
Utilizing the magic of Vinyasa we will continually move
through many Sun Salutations...followed by Kirtan. Stay after
for healthy nibbles and conversation. I hope you can attend.
All levels welcome! Knowledge of Surya Namaskara A is
helpful but not required. |
The Mala
A mala (Sanskrit for garland) is a meditation tool, used to count
the number
of mantra repetitions completed per sitting. Mantra repetition
using a mala
is an effective way of keeping your mind focused, and can make
meditation
more relaxing and soothing by relieving physical tension.
Historically, malas have been used as a part of an integrated
spiritual
practice that may also contain hatha yoga.
A mala contains 108 beads and a larger “meru” bead. The
tassled “meru” bead
is symbolic of the transcended state, and indicates the beginning
and end of
a cycle. The significance of “108” is because the
Brahmand (universe) is
made up of 108 elements (and according to modern scientific
chemistry, the
universe is made up of more than 108 elements). So 108 represents
the
universe.

Modern Western culture and technology
is inextricably tied to the belief in the existence of a self as a
separate ego, separated from and in conflict with the rest of the
world. In this classic book, Watts provides a lucid and simple
presentation of an alternative view based on Hindi and Vedantic
philosophy.
Book
Description
A witty attack on the illusion that the self is a separate ego that
confronts a universe of alien physical objects.
About the
Author
Alan W. Watts (1915-1973) was instrumental in introducing Eastern
thought to Western civilization. He held both a master's degree in
theology and a doctorate of divinity, and is best known as an
interpreter of Indian and Chinese philosophy in general, and Zen
Buddhism in particular. He has earned the reputation of being one
of the most original philosophers of the century. He was the author
of hundreds of articles on philosophy and religion, and 33 books
which have been translated into eleven
languages.

Traditional
Ashtanga Yoga with Manju Jois
January
24th & 25th 2009
Saturday 2 Sessions Morning and Afternoon
Sunday 2 Sessions Morning and Afternoon
Cost $175 before 11/1/08
$200 after 11/1/08

Manju is dedicated to
his mission of teaching the ancient tradition of Ashtanga Vinyasa
Yoga, for a total mind-body-spirit unification with Self and God.
Manju and his father, Shri Pattabhi Jois, brought Ashtanga Vinyasa
Yoga to America in 1975 and Manju has traveled worldwide teaching
this tradition as taught to Pattabhi Jois by his legendary teacher
T Krishnamacharya.
Ashtanga
Yoga: Ashtanga Yoga is a
form of Hatha Yoga that uses a powerful sequence of postures
combined with breath to create an internal heat that opens the
muscles and purifies the body. Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient
systematic practice of yoga that slowly builds in difficulty to
allow students to safely access their full potential. Focus on
breath, balance, and energy allows students to bring all their
attention to the flow of postures in moving meditation. Ashtanga
yoga is a rigorous, physically demanding practice in a heated
room.

Manju will introduce the original Sanskrit counting method, helping students learn the correct breath sequence of Primary Series. A combination of meditation chants, pranayamas and asanas make each practice session the purest experience of Ashtanga Yoga. The Shanti Mantras, or Vedic Peace Chants, spread the benefits of practice beyond the self. Taking the time to learn and repeat the Shanti Mantras is very powerful -- having occasion to practice them with others is astounding. Manju offers truly authentic guidance for all who wish to follow Ashtanga’s life-enriching path to Enlightenment.

systematic approach to learning and understanding the Ashtanga
Primary Series. Suitable for all levels, the onlYoga Ashtanga
Foundations series offers new students a thorough and safe
introduction to learning the Ashtanga Vinyasa method while building
the strength and confidence necessary to move into more advanced
classes in the studio. For more experienced practitioners,
the course provides a tool for reviewing and strengthening the
fundamental concepts that make the Ashtanga form so dynamic.
We recommend new students start at the beginning of the 4 week
series, however, since this is an ongoing course students can drop
in for any of the 4 classes.

Exploring

Description: The
second or intermediate series of ashtanga yoga is know for its
ability to alleviate depression and other nervous disorders.
Comprised of numerous backbends, arm balances and hip openers, the
sequence can be complex and challenging. An integral
complement to the Primary Series, the Intermediate or Second Series
extends the spine backward, allowing for the opening and
strengthening of the front body. Spinal rotations loosen our
grasp on blocks and encourage fresh awareness to flow through nerve
channels. The sequence effectively rids the body and mind of
fear, negativity and ineffective patterns of holding. During
the seminar there will be plenty of time for individual attention.
Prior experience with the Second Series is not necessary, but
students should have a regular Primary Series
practice
